Who Makes Hampton Bay Air Conditioners & What has Happened to Them?

This question we wondered for a couple of reasons. We could not find any new models of these AC units in stores or online.

We know Hampton Bay was a brand carried by Home Depot so logically we went to them to find the answers.

Here is what we asked them:

Can anyone tell me if the Hampton Bay Air Conditioner is still being made and sold? All I see online are replacement parts now.
What happened to them? Were they discontinued? When? Why?

Here is what Home Depot replied:

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community.

Seasonal air conditioners come and go throughout time, and it’s been a few years since I’ve personally seen a Hampton Bay product in a/c form at my Home Depot store in Atlanta.

As you may or may not know, Hampton Bay is a private brand owned exclusively by the Home Depot. In the form of ceiling fans specifically, various and multiple suppliers and vendors are contracted by our company but have one logo, Hampton Bay, on the product.

For air conditioners, most are/were made by the Fedders Corp. While I’m too low on the corporate totem pole to know when and why our Hampton Bay brand was discontinued for seasonal air conditioners, I can say that LG and GE still make most of our in-store stocked a/c units as of the writing of this post.

These are just as good, if not better than some of the Fedders/Hampton Bay lines. I know us and Lowe’s do brand shuffles with certain brands throughout the years, be it exterior stain or riding mowers.

While I don’t know if that’s the case for another national brand overtaking our private one, this could have been a case of the company getting a better deal this way. Just my 2 cents on the matter. I will say that typically air conditioner parts can sometimes be almost the same price as a full replacement of the unit itself.

So depending on what you are looking for, the LG or GE brands can be affordable and of the same quality, we’ve sold for years.
